Music plays an important role in the life of Green's Farms Church. Our music program is very eclectic, and our congregation enjoys a wide range of musical repertoires and styles throughout the church year. There are many opportunities for participation in the music program, and all interested musicians are warmly invited to join us. For more information contact Eileen Hunt at 227-2728 Ext. 103.
Eileen Hunt, Ph.D., Minister of Music
Throughout the next two months GFC will host many special events in celebration of our 300th anniversary. Music has played a very important role in our year-long celebration beginning in June 2010 with our festive service introducing the beautiful timpani which were received by the Music Ministry as a very generous gift. In September we debuted the first of our musical commissions, the new hymn, “O Holy One and Nameless” by James Gertmenian. The festivities continued in November when Eileen had the honor and privilege of premiering James Woodman's magnificent Green's Farms Concertino scored for organ and brass quintet. On March 27 we premiered two new anthems by Westport composer Edward Thompson, Psalm 150 and Through All Generations with the composer himself conducting our choir and soloists. Let me share with you some of the exciting events which are yet to come:
MAY 1 Orphenians in Concert
The Orphenians, a select group of outstanding vocalists from Staples High School, will perform a concert in the Meetinghouse at 4 PM. They will be joined for two numbers by various members of the Westport 4th and 5th grade choruses and also students from the Columbus Elementary School in Bridgeport. A freewill offering will benefit the Music Department of the Bridgeport School. All members of the 4th and 5th grade choruses are invited to attend and participate, so please help us spread the word by telling your friends and neighbors about this wonderful concert. If you have a 4th or 5th grader who sings and would like to join us, please see the attached info sheet for details and contact Eileen Hunt to RSVP.
MAY 15 Jazz Sunday
One of GFC's favorites services, the jazz service will include a visiting professional jazz trio, and our 4th and 5th grade chorus members will join this time with our own Chancel Choir to sing "Shine a Little Light' which is one of the pieces they sang with the Orphenians in concert. Non-GFC chorus friends are welcome to come and sing, also, so please help us by spreading the word to your friends and neighbors and contact Eileen if your child would like to participate. Our Chancel Choir will also sing two other works in the jazz idiom with our visiting musicians, and we will also celebrate Confirmation that morning.
JUNE 12 Celebration Sunday
On June 12 we will celebrate the end of a full year of acitivites celebrating the 300th anniversary. We will recap all three of our musical commissions, described above, and we will hear music from our choir, soloists, the Arlberg Brass Quintet and our magnificent organ. You will not want to miss this fabulous celebration.
